Social Media: Challenges and Opportunities

I found this article interesting because it talks about how we should be careful about what we say while using social media because what we say or do can be interpreted differently then what we were expecting. The article is really talking about how journalist and reporters need to be careful about what they say while using Twitter when talking about events that they are following because everything is black and white in their world. They need to make sure that what they are saying isn't going to rub anyone the wrong way. At the same time, this could be related to how society uses social media such as Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc. Social media is so open these days that it is pretty easy for someone to find something out about you. Also, I feel that social media could be hurtful to our society. It is pretty much forced upon us to have some sort of social media site because that is the only way you are going to be able to contact others. And with that, information about yourself is going to be easier to get or acquire. I'm not saying that we shouldn't use some form of social media, we just need to be careful about what information we are giving out and how we are expressing ourselves to others.

  1. Social media is as part of life as sleeping. It is everywhere and life is now like living in a fish bowl whether we like it or not. Its great to see someone realize that we need to be more careful about what we put out there. Especially with the new feature of timeline on Facebook. If something wants to come back and haunt us it can and it will. We are now entering a period in time where everything we do must be done carefully. Our lives are being recorded and the past can be as vivid as we want it to be.

  2. I just "upgraded" (If you can call it that) to Timeline on facebook and I do not like it at all. With a click anyone can go back to what I said when I first created my facebook back in I think 2007. Timeline made me rethink who I was friends with, who can see what, etc. I knew everyone I had as "friends" through going to school with them mostly, but still went through and deleted about 40 people just because of how open every little thing is that I post. I'm actually debating on deleting my facebook altogether because of how much information is out there but it is much easier to stay in contact with people who don't live close to me so the verdict is still out.
